Wessex Ballroom

The air conditioned ballroom, with a dedicated floor area of some 67ft by 34ft, is rated the very best on which our guests have danced, and it is true to say that they return many times for the delight and pleasure of dancing on this floor. For this reason we host many of our optional tuition weekends at this venue.

Food and Restaurant

Having enjoyed some 12 holidays a year at this venue since 2008 Carole and I can confirm that the restaurant and the meals were rated highly by 95% of our guests. The restaurant ambience is very comfortable, with hot breakfast and our evening meals served at the tables. Sample menus from our New Year breaks at this hotel can be found here.

Rooms and Public Areas

Bedrooms have been recently refurbished, with a high standard of bathroom. The rooms are rated as ‘very good’ by 75% of our visitors and ‘good’ by the remainder. The layout of the hotel means you pass through the Reception, with the Bar to your right and the Restaurant to your left.

The owners, manager and staff at the hotel (a sister hotel to the Durrant House Hotel) continue to raise the standards in every area of its service, housekeeping and food, and Carole and I are entirely satisified that all new visitors will thoroughly enjoy their stay.

An Electric Vehicle charging point is located in the hotel car park.

As regular visitors to the Wessex it was nice to see some new options on the menu. Enjoyed the mushroom starter, the chicken with chorizo sauce and the asiete of puddings

Steve & Debbie are excellent teachers. They covered a routine we always wanted to learn. The lessons were very enjoyable, easy to follow and retain and we will definitely use this routine again. Also very pleased they covered Rumba technique so thoroughly as well.

Thoroughly enjoyed the weekend break with our friends. Very well organised and run. Paul played beautiful music. Well done.

Places of Interest

Wells: See England’s smallest City! situated at the foot of the Mendip Hills, the historic Cathedral City of Wells has all the modern conveniences plus charm, interesting shops, hotels and restaurants.

Glastonbury: The town of Glastonbury is particularly notable for the myths and legends surrounding a nearby hill, Glastonbury Tor, which rises up from the otherwise flat landscape of the somerset levels. These myths concern Joseph of Arimathea and the Holy Grail, and also King Arthur.

Cheddar: The original home of the very English Cheddar Cheese. Today the village is a small town, and gets very busy in summer, with its tea shops and cheese shops. The village is sited next to Cheddar Gorge, which cuts through the Mendip Hills. The area is famous for its caves and potholes

Street: Street is notable for the number of shoe and sheepskin shops

Birdwatchers’ paradise at Avalon Marshes, a 6 mile drive via A39 west of the hotel. Car park at ST449397 to visit Ham Wall, Ashcott Corner, and Shapwick Heath.

Glastonbury Extravaganza

Since 1996 the Extravaganza has been an annual event staged at Glastonbury Abbey. Recent concerts featuring Madness, Status Quo, Bjorn Again, Squeeze, Lulu, Van Morrison, Joss Stone and the West End show "Rat Pack live from Las Vegas" have increased the variety of the programme of entertainment. The beautiful grounds and special atmosphere of Glastonbury Abbey help make this one of the most memorable and successful outdoor events of its type.
